Little Mix interview: 'We don't want this year to end'

Little Mix interview: ‘We don’t want this year to end’

With the ninth series of The X Factor now under way, it’s odd to think that this time last year Little Mix were little more than a twinkle in Tulisa’s eye.

Digital Spy caught up with Jade, Jesy, Leigh-Anne and Perrie to talk about their new single ‘Wings’, their as-yet-untitled debut album and find out what they make of this year’s X Factor judging lineup.

You performed in front of a group of journalists at the X Factor new series launch. How did it go?
Jade: “It was pretty nerve-wracking actually! We’d hadn’t seen the whole gang for ages.”
Perrie: “It was great to catch up with little Louis and Tulisa was literally grinning like a Cheshire cat. Nicole was bobbing her head along like she was into it as well. And then Sinitta was in the corner going absolutely nuts!”
“It brought back a lot of memories from the show, which made us all a bit emotional.”

Are you excited for the new series of the show?
Jesy: “It’s great but also sad. We don’t want our year to end – we want to be the winners forever!”
Perrie: “I suppose people still talk about Leona, JLS, Alexandra Burke and all them. Maybe it won’t be so bad.”

Surely you’re booked in for an X Factor live show performance though, right?
Perrie: “Hopefully! All to be confirmed. We really, really want to go back.”

Your new single ‘Wings’ is out. Have the nerves kicked in yet?
Jesy: “We are so excited for this track. It’s had such a great response and we’d absolutely love it to get to number one.”

It’s had over six million hits on YouTube; surely it’s a shoo-in for number one?
Jade: “We can’t believe it’s had that many hits… we thought the counter was wrong! We’re keeping positive and we’re really hopeful, but ultimately it’s more important that people like the song itself than its chart position.”
Perrie: “We’ve released a lot earlier than previous X Factor winners, which makes us nervous, but we can honestly say that we’ve worked so hard on this that we feel we deserve for it to have some success.”

You’ve opted for a different sound compared to the dance music that’s dominating the charts at the moment…
Perrie:“It feels like everyone at the moment really has to step up their game because the music out there at the moment is so amazing. Rita Ora, Rihanna, Chris Brown…
Jade: “Our song isn’t as clubby as everything out there which hopefully means it will stand out. It was really important for us to bring something fresh and different to the table.”

Is the album finished yet?
Jesy: “It’s pretty much finished. We’re just finalising a few songs and perfecting bits here and there. We’re so excited for everyone to hear it. It’s very versatile – it definitely has what we would call the Little Mix flavour on there.”

What song are you most proud of on it?
Leigh-Anne: “We love all the songs on the album but we’re probably most proud of the stuff we’ve written or had a big hand in. It’s nice to sing words that have come from you, but each song is our favourite for completely different reasons.
Jesy: “We’ve played it to our friends and family and everyone is coming back to us with different favourite tracks, which we hope is a good sign!”

Is there a big ballad on there?
Perrie: “Yes… well, there might be!”

You’re releasing it during the busy Christmas period. Have you been eyeing up the competition?
Perrie: “We’re loving Pink’s new song – how high does she sing in her new single? I’ve tried to sing it but I can’t!”
Jade: “It’s a busy period but there’s room for all of us. Everyone seems to be coming out with their own individual sound – although a lot of sick acts seem to be making comebacks this Christmas!”

Now we’ve seen the first few episodes of The X Factor, which group should each judge get this year?
Jesy: “I think Tulisa will get the boys. Gary will get the groups, Nicole will get the overs and…”
Perrie: “There’s no way Louis will get the girls.”
Leigh-Anne: “Nicole will get the girls. Actually I don’t know.”
Perrie: “Can you imagine if it was our job to decide this?”

Looking back over your experience on the show, would you all do it again?
Jesy: “I definitely would. Don’t get me wrong, it was a very tiring and stressful experience, but I wouldn’t change anything.”
Perrie: “It was so knackering that I don’t think I could do it all over again. It was absolutely incredible but very emotionally draining.”
Leigh-Anne: “I can honestly say it was the best experience of my life. Meeting and getting to know each other and moving into the X Factor house was great.”
Jesy: “Oh my god, that house. The cleaners refused to clean our area because it was so messy.”

We know you’re all fans of the Spice Girls; would you like to see more of them after their closing ceremony performance?
Perrie: “Oh my god, we were there and it was the most amazing thing. I didn’t think I would be able to stop crying. It was a bit embarassing.”
Jesy: “We were all the biggest fans of them. We had the posters, the duvets…”
Leigh-Anne: “When they performed at the Olympics it didn’t feel like they’d ever been apart. I really hope they do something else together again soon. Who wouldn’t love it?”
