Exclusve - We talk to Little Mix's tour director about the upcoming tour

We love exclusives here at LittleMixDaily.com, and with the Little Mix tour coming round the corner, we managed to get Little Mix’s Musical tour director Richard Taylor.

Richard has worked with some of the most gifted acts in the music industry such as Little Mix, Steps and the X Factor Finalists. Check out the interview below…

LMD: How did you goin the Little Mix tour come about?
“I have been Musical Director for the X Factor tour since 2006 and Keyboard player when we had the live band on the tour, so I worked with the girls last year on the tour. I have also worked with other artists signed to the same Management as the girls.”

LMD: How does Little Mix compare too the other artists you’ve worked with in the past
“Every tour you do is different but I have really enjoyed working with the girls. They work really hard at everything they do and there have always been plenty of laughs at rehearsals.”

LMD: How much input have Little Mix had in terms of the set list or any other musical inputs?
“The girls work very closely with the show producer Beth Honan and the Management and myself over the choice of songs. They also have their own ideas when it comes to musical arrangements.”

LMD: What songs are you most looking forward to hearing on the tour?
“‘Love Drunk’ and ‘Stereo Soldier’ both sound amazing with the live band, it takes the tracks to another level.”

LMD: What songs (apart from the ones on the album) can we expect the girls to perform on the tour?
Ha ha ha you will have to come to a gig to find that out 😀 everyone likes a surprise!

LMD: Have you made any changes to any of the songs to make them more “arena friendly” or too improve them slightly?
“I think the addition of a live band has changed most of the tracks in a positive way. It always does. There are always things you find to add to a track when you play it live, It may be something that was on the album that wasn’t so prominent or it maybe a dance move the girls do that the drummer can accentuate.”

LMD: What has been the worst thing that has happened during the tour rehearsals so far?
“So far so good, More time would have been good but I guess there never is enough time. There are always little things that go wrong in the preparation stage of putting a live tour together but so far nothing major.”

LMD: From your perspective, what would be the worse case scenario when performing live at a tour date?
“Making a mistake, somebody falling ill and not being able to perform.”

LMD: What has been the most enjoyable experience of working on the Little Mix tour?
“I think that moment is still to come when I stand at the back of the gig and watch the first show. It is always a proud moment when you can watch and listen to everything come together and see all your hard work finally enjoyed by an audience.I wish I was playing in the band, I know the musicians are really enjoying playing the songs. But you cant play on every job that you do.Sometimes it is easier to MD a gig if you are not playing the gig yourself as you don’t have to concentrate on what you are playing and you can focus on everything else around you.”

LMD: Have you got any tips for anyone who wants to a musical director/producer?
“Listen and get involved with as many different genres of music that you possibly can. As a producer although you may have your strengths in one particular genre this does limit you as to what work you can take on when you are asked, you never know what it is going to be. There is a lot about being a musical director that has very little to do with music. Always a lot of organisation to bring a project together, phone calls, emails, time schedules,You can end up with weeks of work before you end up playing a note.”

LMD: Anything else you’d like too add about the tour?
“I hope that everyone who goes to the gigs enjoys them as much as I have enjoyed helping to put the tour together.I look forward to working with the girls again soon.It would be great next time to work on a Arena tour with Little Mix.Keep all the support up and fingers crossed next tour we can. All the best, Rich T”
