Jade visits a local charity in South Shields

Little Mix star Jade Thirwall brought the X-mas factor to a seasonal singalong at a South Tyneside charity.

The chart-topping musician swapped sell-out shows for a spot on the sofa to join in with the yuletide tunes at Cancer Connections, based on Harton Lane in South Shields.

Jade, 19, is a patron of the charity, which offers a wide range of services for cancer sufferers, from counselling and bereavement and family support to complementary therapies.

As well as adding her celebrated vocal chords to a sprinkling of festive songs, she also weighed in with an impromptu version of Happy Birthday for her mum Norma, who turned 55 yesterday.

The event was set up to help get Cancer Connections service users, family and staff in a merry mood just days before Christmas.

Jade merrily mingled as visitors enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies.

She dropped off signed CDs and other Little Mix merchandise to Cancer Connections staff and service users who were happy to see an old friend back in the fold.

Jade said: “I’m a patron of the charity and supported it before I was in X Factor. I always pop in when I am back home. It’s great that I can use the status that I have to bring more attention to the cause. It’s always nice to come here as everyone is so welcoming. I’m not a superstar here, and don’t want to be – I’m just part of the gang.”

Jade, who now lives in London, is delighted to be back home for the holidays.

She added: “I’m just going to have a nice, normal family Christmas. We’ll be watching EastEnders and The Queen’s Speech. It’s great to be back home before we start our tour of the UK in January.”

Deborah Roberts, co-founder of Cancer Connections, said: “It’s lovely to see Jade as she has always been involved in the charity. We are quite lucky to have someone like her who is happy to promote the work of the charity.”
