LITTLE Mix proved a smash hit as they mixed with fans at a South Tyneside cancer charity’s base.

The winning X Factor band – which stars South Shields singers Jade Thirlwall and Perrie Edwards – dropped in at Cancer Connection’s bungalow yesterday to see the invaluable work being done.

The group – back in the region to play two gigs at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena as part of the X Factor Live Tour – visited the South Shields charity as Jade, 19, has just become its patron. Deborah Roberts, charity co-founder, took the girls on a tour of the Harton Lane bungalow, where they met volunteers and members.

Deborah said: “It was fantastic Little Mix could take time out of their busy schedule to pay us all a visit here at Cancer Connections.

“Jade has supported us from day one, so it’s wonderful she is now our patron, and it was lovely being able to show the other girls around too, so they could see what goes on here.

“All the children loved having the chance to meet the girls and get their pictures taken. There were a lot of happy faces.

“Last night we also got to see the girls in action at the arena, and they were just amazing.” Little Mix posed for pictures with all of the children, whose lives have been affected by family members battling or dying from cancer.

And they then handed out signed posters before answering questions from the youngsters.

Jade, from Laygate, said: “I really am chuffed to bits to be a patron for Cancer Connections. When I was told I had to pick a charity to support. I knew instantly it would be them because I know all the amazing work they do.”

Perrie, from Whiteleas, was also impressed with the organisation as she looked around with fellow bandmates Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. The 18-year-old said: “I think it’s great how the bungalow has such a homely feel. It’s somewhere where you can come and just put your feet up and relax while having a chat to your friends. I can see why the charity is so popular.”

After leaving the bungalow, the girls headed off to get ready for last night’s gig at the arena.

Jade said: “It’s been extra special that we’ve been able to perform at the arena, it’s something Perrie and I have always dreamed of, and it’s wonderful that we’re back in the north east once again with the people who have supported us right from the start.”
