As a member of Britain’s hottest new girl band Little Mix star Perrie Edwards should be in the pink.

After three number one singles, a hit debut album and a sell-out UK tour she and her band mates touched down in LA this week to an ecstatic welcome from their fans across the pond.

The “Wings” stars seem to be flying high and on the brink of breaking the lucrative US market.

But for Perrie, 19, the meteoric rise of the X Factor winners has been marred by personal heartache – her beloved Nan’s battle with bone cancer and the devastating claims that her One Direction boyfriend Zayn Malik cheated on her with an Aussie waitress.

Speaking for the first time about her three months of hell Perrie admits she wouldn’t have got through it without the support of her Little Mix family.

“The best part about being in a group is having each other for support,” says Perrie.

“The girls are like my sisters and always look out for me. They have helped me through what has happened.

“My Nan has bone cancer and it’s been recurring over the past few years.

“She was unwell before the X Factor but she was always rooting for me throughout the show.

“She got a bit better but has been unwell again recently. It has been really hard but she is a little fighter.”

And Perrie showed her own inner strength by fighting to save her relationship with Zayn, 20, after blonde Courtney Webb claimed he bedded her in January while Little Mix were away on tour.

Courtney, known as CJ, said Zayn told her he was single before they romped beneath a portrait of Perrie in the 1D star’s £2.2 million mansion.

Perrie was clearly devastated when the sordid story hit the headlines.

But, while she refuses to talk in detail about the incident, it’s clear she doubt’s the petite waitress’s story…….even though CJ had mobile phone snaps of Zayn asleep in bed.

Perrie says simply: “I try not to let what I read in the paper get to me. But I still read things and I think ‘That didn’t happen.’

“But as long as me and the rest of the girls know it’s not true, that’s what matters.

“We laugh about things and refuse to let it get to us.”

Perrie, insists her year-long relationship with Zayn is stronger than ever and praises him and the 1D boys as “so big and so amazing”.

“Things are all good”

“We’ve all had to manage relationships in the band…..dealing with it and making time for our boyfriends.

“Zayn is my best friend and I’ve seen more of him since we finished our tour and but it’s hard as One Direction have been on tour as well.”

“But we went to The Brits together last month and had a great time.”

Perrie has also learned to cope with the negative reactions of jealous 1D-ers.

“It is hard when fans say nasty things on Twitter but we are starting to build a thicker skin and are getting used to it,” she says.

“It comes with the territory and you have got to deal with it.

“A lot of 1D fans are our fans as well and most are very supportive of us.”

The other members of Little Mix have also had to deal with personal lows as their careers have taken off.

Jesy Nelson, 21, recently split from her boyfriend, Diversity star Jordan Banjo.

She has since been linked to one of the boys from The Mend, the Britain’s Got Talent group who supported the girls on tour, but insists there’s nothing going on.

But Essex-born Jesy admits: “I believe that girls should wear the trousers in a relationship.

“I think we all do in the band actually. But I am such a believer that the boys should be the romantic one and treat you like a princess.”

She also says she’s got the hots for Justin Timberlake.

“He is so sexy! He was amazing at The Brits. His voice is incredible although I really wanted him to bust some moves too.

“He has a real aura about him….like Simon Cowell.

“I don’t fancy Simon though……but my mum Janis does. She keeps asking ‘When are you going to set me up on a date with Simon?’”

Looking fit and toned Jesy has also finally come to love her womanly curves.

“There were jibes about my weight when I was on The X Factor with random people putting up nasty stuff on websites and Twitter,” she says.

“I was very upset……it’s just cruel bullying.

“Before we went on tour, we all had a personal trainer to get in shape. I’ve still got my boobs and my bum but I definitely feel more toned.”

Little Mix have all signed up to support Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life campaign this year.

It will be especially poignant for band member Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 21, who lost her grandmother to colon cancer.

“My Grandma Norma died four years ago,” she says. “She fought it and fought it until she could no more.

“She never got to see me sing, which is really upsetting.

“Every Sunday we used to do talent shows and she would hear me sing on the karaoke.

“She knew that I loved to sing but I never really took it as seriously as I did until The X Factor.

“My Gran was a big influence in my life. I miss her so much. She was 64 when she died.

“The other girls still have their grandparents and I always tell them to treasure every moment with them because you never know when they are going to be snatched away.

“I would love her to have seen me on stage – but I feel like she is up there watching me.”

Leigh-Anne’s Gran never got to meet her current beau – ex-footballer Jordan Kiffin.

“I’m sure she would like him though,” she smiles.

“When I’m not working we spend as much time as we can together. But equally it’s nice when we do spend long periods apart, because, when we do see one another, it’s extra special.”

The fourth member of the quartet Jade Thirlwall, 20, is dating Diversity dancer Sam Creaske.

The pair have recently moved in together – despite reports that she had a fling with X Factor reject Derry Mensah last year.

“I don’t know where people get their information from sometimes,” says Jade.

“I’ve read that I am splitting up with Sam but that’s not the case.

“You have to ignore things and not get upset about what you read, especially when you’re in a relationship. At the end of the day what happens is between us and you have to keep that private.

“But we are really happy with where we are at the minute.

“It is hard when we don’t see one another and you have to keep the spark going. But we ring and Skype each other constantly.

“Sam is really busy all the time too. He trains every day until 11 at night and often I’m at home before him. I go to bed and wait for him to come in.

“When we go to Asda we have the time of our lives. We joke that going to the supermarket is like having a date. But we enjoy it because it’s something normal for us.”

Little Mix’s new single How Ya Doin?, which features hip-hop star Missy Elliott, is released in May.

By then it seems they will already have won over more American fans.

“Some fans do go a bit crazy,” admitted Jesy.

“When we were in Australia one girl said ‘If you don’t follow me on Twitter, I am going to drink bleach!’

“And another fan started licking the window of our car, which was really, really weird!”
