Interview - Little Mix talk bullying, 'Wings' and favourite books with The Stacks

Originally auditioning as solo performers, Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall became Little Mix during the 2011 series of The X Factor UK, and went on to be crowned the show’s first ever victorious group. Their single “Cannonball” shot straight to No.1 in the UK & Ireland, and they released their debut album DNA in December 2012. Their story sounds similar to One Direction’s, and in fact, Perrie Edwards and Zayn Malik are dating! Find out more about this lucky group of women.

Q: How has your life has changed since The X Factor?
Jesy: Oh gosh. Um, it has just been completely epic and dramatic, and…ahhhh . . . It’s just been absolutely amazing and we couldn’t have wanted anything more.

Q: Where were you when you first heard “Cannonball” on the radio?
Jade: Ooooh, I think we all were together, weren’t we, like traveling in the car when we first heard it for the first time. And I remember it was such a weird moment. It was the first time we’d ever heard our music on the radio and it was so special. I’ll never forget that really. It was weird feeling.

Q: What is the inspiration for your song, “Wings?” I was reading that it’s about bullying. Have you guys ever been bullied?
Jesy: I think we’ve all been through a bit of bullying like growing up, but I think you just have to surround yourself with people that love you and your friends and just kind of ignore it. During The X Factor, we got a bit of hate, but you just have to learn to ignore it because at the end of the day, for every bad comment you get there’s like a thousand good comments. That’s what the song “Wings” is all about, you know, like when we say, “Don’t let what they say keep you up at night,” and “We don’t let nobody bring us down.” When wrote it, we definitely thought of all the things that we’d be feeling and also what we could write to inspire our fans as well. So yeah, we definitely can relate to that song a lot.
Jade: When we did the album, we just really wanted to relate to our fans and kind of make them all feel really positive and stuff. If we can achieve that, then that will be a job well done really.

Q: What American city would you most want to visit?
Perrie: I’d love to go to L.A.!! It always looks sunny and beautiful in the movies. I can’t wait to see it in person!

Q: Who are your musical influences?
Leigh-Anne: I’m really, really into old-school R&B and like slow jams and stuff. I literally just love anything that’s slow and R&B really. Um, I also love Usher as well. I’d love to collaborate with Usher.

Q: What’s your all-time favorite book?
Jesy: My all-time favorite book is A Child Called It (for ages 12 and up). I love that book. It was so interesting and I just really, really got into it and I literally couldn’t put the book down. And it’s just a really sad story.
Perrie: Any of the Dr. Seuss books. I loooved those growing up.

Q: Who was your very first celebrity crush?
Jesy: Ooh. Justin Timberlake. Unfortunately I haven’t met him yet. Oh, I couldn’t take it anyway.

Q: How did your friends react when you got on The X Factor?
Leigh-Anne: I think most of them were just so proud. All my friends knew from day one how much I wanted to be a singer. So when they saw me up there, I think they were bursting with pride really. I’m so lucky to have the friends that I do because they’re just so supportive and amazing, and none of them have changed like since me doing The X Factor and stuff. They’re all always there for me. I think a lot of them as well were just so shocked by everything. I mean, it’s so crazy. Like even now I’m still trying to let it sink in and still trying to pinch myself because it just doesn’t seem real.

Q: What has been your most embarrassing moment?
Perrie: I have embarrassing moments all the time because I’m clumsy! But to be honest, I just laugh at myself most of the time so I don’t really get that embarrassed!

Q: What would an absolute perfect date would be for you?
Jade: Oooh, I think a perfect date for me would be something quirky and funny. I love Disney, so if my date took me to Disneyland Paris or Disney World, Florida that would be really nice. And Italian as well. I love Italian food. If somebody did something really little and thoughtful, whether it was like, I don’t know, getting a nice little present or saying something really complimentary then I’m quite easily pleased.

Q: What is your favorite motto or a quote that you live your life by?
Jesy: Just be yourself, and never let anyone tell you that you can’t be.
Leigh-Anne: Just believe. I’ve got “Believe” tattooed on my neck.
Jade: My favorite motto is “No day but today.” One of my friends passed away and ever since then, that’s been my motto in life.
Perrie: I believe everything happens for a reason, and good things come to those who wait but faster yet to those who take.

Must Read Jesy - 'I’d give Harry Styles a slap round the ear’ole'

Check out Jesy’s interview with Sugarscape about their recent tour and Valentine’s Day.

HI JESY. So how’s the tour going?
HIYA. It’s great – all of the songs on our album are quite upbeat and funky, so it’s got loads and loads of dance routines. This sounds really cheesy but I’m excited to perform every single one – I don’t have a favourite.

What about the rubbish ones like Always Be Together?
Awwww nooo! I love them all! We wouldn’t have a song that we don’t like on our album or the tour.

So you’re all away from your fellas for a long time on this tour then…
We’re kind of used to it really. My boyfriend goes away a lot anyway because they’re always on tour, so’s Perrie’s boyfriend, and so Leigh-Anne’s the only one who’s got to get used to it now.

Will she be moaning to you all the time like “I miss hiiiiiim…WAAAAH”
Yeah probably! Ha, no she’s fine, they’re all gonna come see the shows. We Skype and text and Facetime and stuff anyway so we’re always in touch.

Will you be doing Valentine’s presents?
Well, see, I’m really bad, I never buy a boy valentines presents. I think it should all be about the boy buying the girl stuff and treating her. That’s what happened last year with my boyfriend, I think he was a bit gutted when I was like “Erm, I don’t actually have anything!”

What would would you expect in a new relationship?
Ooh, I’m actually an old romantic and I really love flowers. Last year my boyfriend sent me loads of red roses and he took me to see a show and bought me jewellery – he really spoilt me last year actually.

Sets the bar quite high for this year doesn’t it?
Ha, yeah! We’ll be in London for Valentine’s Day this year so we might get a bit of love in.

What about single girls, for whom Valentine’s Day can be a bit like a kick in the teeth from love?
Do you know what, just surround yourself with all your friends and just have a girly night. Chat about how much you hate boys, and just have a big girly night and watch films. Surround yourself with your friends and don’t be on your own – that would be the worst.

Oh Jesy, you’re so wise. Like a more stylish Yoda or something.

Must Read Jesy - 'I’d give Harry Styles a slap round the ear’ole'

Yep Sugarscape have done it again…another Stupid Interview. The last Sugarscape interview the girls, Leighanne (bravely) said she thought Rihanna would be better in bed than Nicki Minaj.

Check out the full interview below….

Right then Jesmondo, give us your best insult
I don’t like insulting people! If someone’s getting on my nerves I just tell them to DO ONE or to bore off – that’s a good one.

Ok, you’re stuck on a desert island about to die, and the only food is celebrity. Who do you eat to survive?

There’s a lot to think about – is it a celebrity you find tasty? Or a good quality piece of meat?
Yeah, I think I’d have to go for someone I find tasty. I would have to go for…Plan B.

Hasn’t he got tattoos? Will the ink make him taste funny?
I don’t care, he’s fit so it wouldn’t bother me!

But he’d be dead.

Anyway, how do you feel about marmite?
Hate it. RANK.

Not even a thin layer?

Marmite crisps?

Ok, would you rather lick a tramp in the armpit or in the nostril?
Euuugh. Nostril.

Why not the armpit?
Because he might have B.O. and that’s just disgusting.

But what about the bogeys?
I think B.O. will taste worse. It’s the smell isn’t it, that makes you gag. So if you went for the armpit and you smelled it you’d be gagging, where as nostril you can’t smell anything, so it’s be that one.

Right. You’re walking down the street one day and you see a lovely old lady about to cross into the path of a LORRY. At the SAME TIME you see a baby with a grenade.

Exactly. You’ve got about five seconds to react.

Yeah, but it could happen.
OK. I feel like I’d have more chance of saving the granny, because if the baby’s got a grenade then I might die as well, so I’d pull the granny back and we’d both be saved, where as if I went to save the baby we’d both die.

When did you last catch someone in an intimate moment?
Ooh… umm… HMMM. [Thinks for about 45 seconds. It gets a bit awkward]

It doesn’t have to be sexy, just intimate.

But obviously sexy is better.
Oh my gosh. Umm…. Oh! Probably Zayn and Perrie, they’re always having intimate moments, they’re so in love with each other. They’re literally all over each other. Well, he’s all over her, he just loves her.

If Harry Styles was cracking on to your little sister what would you do?
I don’t have a little sister, but if I did I would tell him to SOD. RIGHT. OFF – and if he didn’t I’d give him a slap round the ear’ole.

What if she was really into him?
I’d tell her no! I’d tell her she’s gonna get her heart broken, and to stay away.

Wise words.
Ahh that was a fun interview! I like things like that. Hope you have a fun day!

Interview - Little Mix talk girl power & American dreams with PopCrush

Little Mix sat down to talk to US website PopCrush about their US domination attempt which has started this month.

The girls released ‘Wings’ to Canada and the US earlier this month and so far it has proven a great success charting within the top 50 on the iTunes charts without any promo.

    Check out the interview below…

You all auditioned as solo acts, but were put together like One Direction, so the comparisons are inevitable. How do you ladies feel about the constant comparisons?
Jesy: “It’s not a bad thing at all. I don’t mind being compared to them. They are dominating the whole world right now. We think it’s absolutely amazing to be mentioned along with them.”

When ‘X Factor’ puts groups together, they are forced to forge a bond. How did your relationship develop? Easily? Were there growing pains?
Leigh-Anne: “Me and Jesy, we did boot camp together, and we got a chance to bond before, and then Jesy met Jade, and then Perrie came along. So it was like the bond was forming anyway between all of us. When we first set foot on that stage, after we had formed the group, literally, it felt like it was always meant to be that way. I don’t know, it just felt like it was supposed to happen. Like it was fate.”
Jesy: “Before the live shows, we bonded. We got to know each other even better. We became the best of friends and now we are like sisters.”

British and U.K. acts are doing well in the U.S. right now, with the Wanted and Cher Lloyd, too. Why will Little Mix connect with American audiences?
Leigh-Anne: “The doors are opening for us to come in. The thing is that we want to break in America. That has always been one of our dreams. We always that say in a couple years we want to be playing Madison Square Garden. We dream big, and we always say it, that’s our hope… that all goes well.”

One Direction just played there, so it’s possible. There hasn’t been a U.K. girl group or vocal group asserting dominance in a while. Not since the Spice Girls. Can you fill that void?
Jade: “We’d like to think so and that we can. There are not many girl bands around at the moment either. Girl power, right? It’s got to be all about the girls!”

Who has a cool hobby or talent you can tell us about?
Leigh-Anne: “Jesy can beatbox. We can all do accents really well. We put some of the beatboxing on the album, too.”

Do you have any advice for ‘X Factor’ or reality show contestants?
Jade: “The best thing to do is to be confident and be yourself, and stand out, but for the right reasons, not the wrong reasons. All of us always said that we were different but normal. But more importantly, we were not afraid to be ourselves and we weren’t afraid to work. Don’t expect for it to just happen to you. You have to work hard. We worked so hard on to the show to make sure that we were the winners.”
Leigh-Anne: “What people saw about us was how normal we truly are. We are four normal girls who are really down to earth. If one of us wasn’t like that, then the group as a whole wouldn’t work. But the fact that we can all be cool and down to earth is what made this thing work.”

Since America is your dream market to break through in, care to deliver a special message to pop music fans across the pond?
Jade: We want to thank all of the American fans, and to let them know that we will be seeing them soon! We want to thank them for supporting us already. It’s because of that dedication and their support at this stage that we be able to come over there and see them.
